Vendors in Harare on Monday applauded Government and council for demarcating trading places in the Central Business District saying they were no longer having running battles with law enforcement agents.Addressing a press conference, Harare Informal Traders Association president Mr Onisimo Gore urged vendors to operate from designated places.
“We applaud our Government for recognising the important role that the informal traders play in the economy. We also thank Harare City Council for affording us trading places.
“We are happy that both Government and the council are engaging us to have lasting solutions to the problems that arise from the informal trade business.
“We no longer engage in running battles with law enforcement agencies. We are grateful for that respect,” he said.
Mr Gore said vendors that operate from undesignated areas risk being arrested and de-registered by the association.
“We should be law abiding citizens. Anyone of our members who should be found on the wrong side of the law from today (Monday), we will disown you and you will be alone when the law enforcement agents come down on you,” he said.
